How the three endings work
Castlevania: Belmont's Curse has three endings, and defeating Dracula alone does not unlock the best outcome. The true ending requires the Four Virtues, The Self Arcana, and a final use of Absolution. You can pursue every outcome on one save, so reaching the credits does not mean restarting the adventure.
The bad ending is also called the false ending, while good ending and true ending describe the same conclusion. Two decisions determine your route: whether the Cursed Horologium remains active and whether you use Absolution after Dracula's defeat.
| Decision point | Your action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Cursed Horologium in the Clock Tower | Continue with its curse active | Enter the false-ending trap |
| Cursed Horologium in the Clock Tower | Disable its curse | Open the route toward the real finale |
| Scene after Dracula's second phase | Finish without activating Absolution | Receive the normal ending |
| Same scene, with The Self equipped | Activate Absolution when prompted | Receive the true ending |

How to trigger the bad ending
Reach the upper Clock Tower and locate the glowing Cursed Horologium. The trap depends on the clock's curse remaining active when you continue toward the confrontation.
Leave the mechanism running, take the passage on the left, and keep going despite your companions' warnings. Rose confronts Dracula before she is ready, and the sequence leads to the false ending. This route also awards a bonus character skin for Rose.
Afterward, resume your save to continue progressing. You do not need to discard your equipment or start another character to pursue the remaining endings.
If you have already stopped the clock, G2A describes returning with the relevant Arcana equipped and interacting again to restart it. Check the mechanism before taking the passage: an active curse sends you toward the trap.
There is conflicting advice about missability. GameSpot describes the false ending as missable, while G2A and players discussing the clock on Reddit describe reactivating it after other endings. Those accounts support returning later instead of protecting a separate early save.
How to reach the normal ending
The normal ending requires disabling the Horologium's curse, reaching the Master's Quarters, and defeating both phases of Dracula without using Absolution afterward. Completing the optional Virtue route is unnecessary for this outcome.
The clock instructions contain a naming disagreement. G2A's ending guide identifies The Shadow, obtained in Notre-Dame, as the required Arcana. Games.gg instead names Death's Arcana and Soul Harvest. Both describe equipping an Arcana and interacting with the clock; the names should not be assumed interchangeable.
Using G2A's instructions, follow this route:
- Acquire The Shadow in Notre-Dame, equip it, and interact with the Cursed Horologium to stop the clock.
- Continue along the opened route to the Master's Quarters and defeat Dracula's two phases.
- Let the concluding scene finish without activating Absolution, then resume your save after the credits.
Confirm that the clock is stopped before leaving. Interacting with it again can reactivate the trap, so avoid toggling it after you have established the correct state.
Owning The Self does not force the true ending. The deciding action is using its spell during the final opportunity; withholding that activation still allows the normal conclusion.

How to unlock the true ending
The true-ending route adds four Virtue challenges and a confrontation with Rose's shadow before the final Dracula encounter. Prepare those requirements, keep the Horologium stopped, and have Absolution ready.
Gather the Virtue Arcana
You need The Warrior, The Whisperer, The Judge, and The Sage to access the four windows in Notre-Dame. G2A places The Warrior on the Prison Tower progression route, so check your inventory before searching for it again.
G2A gives the following acquisition requirements for the other three cards:
| Card still needed | Preparation to check | Where the route leads |
|---|---|---|
| The Judge | Collect at least 12 HP Upgrades and 12 Mana Upgrades; both totals matter | Palace of Justice |
| The Whisperer | Find the Thrilling Eye, Trembling Eye, and Oozing Eye; open the Gate of Flesh and obtain the Ferryman's Obol | Bring the Obol to the Ferryman |
| The Sage | Finish all four Mirror of Life trials and clear the Hall of Mirrors | Tomb of the Noble Queen |
Treat those as separate preparation chains. If a Virtue window will not respond, first verify that you possess its matching card and have equipped it. Simply having access to a related spell is not the same as placing the required Arcana in your active loadout.
Complete the windows and ring every bell
Return to the Gallery of the Four Virtues in Notre-Dame. Each window requires its matching Arcana, and each completed challenge ends with a bell that you must ring.
Games.gg describes the individual challenges as follows; the card pairings also match G2A's checklist.
| Window | Equip this Arcana | Challenge to complete before ringing its bell |
|---|---|---|
| Temperance | The Whisperer | Climb through a platforming course above the Sea of Souls |
| Prudence | The Sage | Navigate an obstacle course using movement abilities and Mirror Walk |
| Courage | The Warrior | Defeat Joan of Arc in a rematch |
| Justice | The Judge | Survive three enemy waves in a bell tower containing spikes |
Clearing a room is only part of the requirement. Ring its bell before leaving, and repeat until all four are complete.
Then return to the Gallery's center and interact with the central stained-glass window. Defeat the Doppelganger, Rose's shadow counterpart, to obtain The Self. This encounter provides the final Arcana used for the true-ending trigger.
Prepare Absolution and finish the finale
Check that Absolution is available before returning to Dracula. IGN's walkthrough includes leveling The Self after acquiring it and before attempting the final fight again. Its finishing instructions also specify equipping The Self and casting Absolution.
Before entering the Master's Quarters, make these checks:
- The Cursed Horologium is still stopped.
- The Self is equipped, and Absolution is usable.
- You are prepared to defeat both Dracula phases again.
- You will watch the following scene and activate Absolution at its prompt.
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| A Virtue window stays closed | Equip that window's matching Arcana before interacting |
| The central Gallery encounter remains inaccessible | Revisit the trials and verify that all four bells were rung |
| You enter the false-ending sequence again | Return to the Horologium and disable its curse |
| Dracula's defeat produces the normal ending again | Check The Self, Absolution availability, and whether you activated the final prompt |
If you miss the final activation, resume your save and prepare another attempt. Your completed Virtue progress gives you the preparation needed to try again.
What each ending means for Rose
In the bad ending, Rose's apparent victory is part of Death's deception. While she struggles inside the trap, her father's blood restores Dracula's strength. Her confidence gives way to the realization that she has failed to stop his return.
In the normal ending, Rose defeats Dracula's physical form but cannot halt the curse he releases. Her mother's cards protect her, allowing the Belmont line to survive and continue fighting. The immediate battle is won, but the curse spreads beyond Paris and preserves the conditions for Dracula's eventual return.
The true ending changes that outcome through Absolution. Rose combines her own power with the Arcana to destroy the curse, sacrificing the cards and her remaining connection to her mother. Leon can finally depart in peace, and Rose gains a purpose beyond revenge.
That victory does not establish that Dracula can never return. He still threatens a future resurgence. Rose's longer mission becomes teaching humanity to master its inner darkness, weakening the evil on which he depends.
FAQ
Which castlevania belmont's curse ending should I get first?
Start with the bad ending if you want to see every conclusion in sequence. Follow it with the normal ending, then complete the Four Virtues for the true ending. This is a convenient order, rather than a prerequisite chain.
Can I get the true ending before the normal ending?
Yes. Games.gg describes completing the Virtue trials before the first real Dracula fight, and player accounts report obtaining the other endings afterward. You still need The Self equipped and must activate Absolution at the final prompt.
Do I need every Arcana?
The guides disagree. G2A identifies the clock card, four Virtue cards, and The Self as the ending checklist, while Into Indie Games says every Arcana must be collected. A universal collection requirement has not been officially confirmed. Prioritize the named ending requirements and the abilities needed to reach them.
Why did I get the normal ending with The Self?
Possessing the card is insufficient. Equip The Self, make sure Absolution is available, and use it when prompted after Dracula's second phase. Missing that activation produces the normal ending again.
Does the true ending require a new playthrough?
No. Resume after the credits to continue with your progress and equipment. You can complete the remaining preparation and return to Dracula on the same save.
