Leveling up in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse increases Rose's attack and defense. It does not increase maximum health or mana. Check the bottom of the pause menu's Equipment tab to see your combat stats and XP progress. Increasing your health and magic capacity requires separate Heart Fragments.

What changes when you level up

IGN's mechanics guide and players explaining the system on Steam agree: gaining a level raises attack and defense. Red and Blue Books provide additional increases to those same stats through exploration.

To check your progress:

  • Pause and open Equipment.
  • Look at the attack, defense, and XP information along the bottom.
  • Compare your stats after the next level-up.

According to IGN, filling the XP meter triggers another level and increases both combat stats. Your unchanged health bar therefore does not mean the level-up failed.

Why health and mana stay the same

Health and mana upgrades depend on exploration. Brave Heart Fragments are the red collectibles used to expand health; Wise Heart Fragments are the blue collectibles used to expand mana. You need four fragments of the matching type for an increase.

IGN describes these fragments as sitting inside nestlike structures, sometimes beyond obstacles that require later abilities. Mark an unreachable fragment on your map and return when you can access it.

Choose your next activity around the improvement you need. Fight XP-dropping enemies for attack and defense, or search for fragments when you need a larger health or magic meter. Repeated combat cannot replace those fragment upgrades.

How to level up faster

For repeatable XP, fight enemies that drop yellow experience orbs. IGN explains that ordinary defeated enemies normally return after resting at a Mirror of Life. A basic farming loop is therefore to clear nearby enemies, return to the mirror, rest, and repeat.

The Phantom Ring shortens that loop. According to All Things How's XP farming guide, equipping it makes enemies return when you leave their room, allowing you to reset fights through a nearby doorway.

To obtain and use it:

  1. Defeat Talos to obtain Smash.
  2. Visit Western Ascent in the Clock Tower.
  3. Find the chest in the lower-left alcove behind rotating gears.
  4. Equip the Phantom Ring through Equipment → Relics.
  5. Clear an enemy room, cross into the adjacent room, and return.

All Things How demonstrates this loop at Daedalus Crossing, where dual-blade guards occupy the walkways and lift area. The ring saves travel time between fights; its described effect changes respawning rather than increasing the XP awarded per enemy.

Where to farm at different stages

All Things How identifies several useful routes as you progress:

  • Early game: Pauper's Grave, Holy Innocents' Cemetery. Use the western cemetery room for additional levels while its regular enemies remain worthwhile to fight.
  • Mid-game: Crossroads of the Dead, Catacombs of Paris. Reach the boss gate and lower the staircases first. Then clear the Flea Men and use the nearby Quarry Elevator Mirror of Life to reset the route.
  • Later game: Grand Hall, Dracula's Castle. Beyond the Entrance Corridor, axe and lance knights provide another farming option. Their armor makes keeping distance with a whip or spear useful.

Pay attention to drops within these rooms. All Things How includes skulls and Medusa Heads in some farming-area enemy lists, while IGN specifically warns that their endlessly spawning versions award no XP. Their presence does not make them useful farming targets: concentrate on enemies releasing yellow orbs.

Exploration also contributes experience. All Things How reports that breakable golden statues release XP and bosses award it when defeated. Breaking statues along your route can help you progress while searching for the books and fragments that improve Rose beyond her level.
